Nautica was founded in 1983 by David Chu as an American sports fashion company. His earliest fragrance was launched by the company in 1992. This fragrance and the following fragrances were created and marketed in collaboration with the American production company Coty. Many designers have worked on these fragrances, including Maurice Roussel, Patricia Bilodeau, Harry Fremont and Michelle Maine.

The company started with menswear and expanded its range throughout the 1980s. Women's clothing, children's clothing, furniture, accessories and homeware are all part of the company's product range.
